Time Management vs. Time Transcendence
The phrase “time management” is used to describe the act of adjusting daily activities to achieve goals by the most efficient use of personal time. Those promoting time management claim that to be the most productive you must optimize each task, and organize your projects to squeeze out as much productive work as possible.
Time Transcendence however is the process of building systems to replace your daily output, either with machines, computers, or people. By automating or outsourcing time consuming and repetitive tasks, you can transcend your physical and mental limits of production.
Ways to Transcend Productivity Limitations
- Set up email auto-responders.
- Set up channels to direct requests or other customer service.
- Obtain machines to mimic repetitive tasks.
- Outsource time consuming tasks.
- Hire help for labor productivity.
The Productivity Paradox
By investing time or money setting up systems to automate and computerize tasks, the advantages are only gained after the systems begin to work, and when the time or money invested is recouped.
The time spent looking for the perfect computer program to manage a to-do list, could have been spent jotting down a few scribbles on a piece of paper. Sometimes we want to automate and outsource without sacrificing time by overlooking simple solutions.
Throughout history humans have searched for ways to transcend our limitations. Through the use of the first simple machines such as the lever and pulley we have overcome our physical limits. The information age however requires that we build systems not only to overcome our physical output but our mental output as well.
