Twitter Marketing

Twitter has become a powerful tool to spread your message, connect with others and build traffic to your website. It’s 75+ million members that have sent over 18 billion tweets since it’s inception in 2006.

Since I’ve joined twitter I have learned some effective strategies and also what you should avoid.

Twitter Marketing Tips

Retweets

Retweets are a great way to attract traffic and to gain new followers. A few services have popped up exchanging retweets for retweets or you opt to buy retweets.

Retweet.it is a free and paid service that allows you spread your message to a larger audience in exchange for retreating or purchasing. For a small fee you can get anywhere from 50 retweets up to 300 retweets at a time. In order to join you must have at least 50 followers, this ensures that someone with 0 followers cannot retweet your message.

Other services have come and gone, but retweet.it is still running smoothly. I’ve been experimenting with it on a couple of websites. Make sure to add hashtags (#keyword) to your message for more exposure. Try it for free

Social News

Social news website’s have have been built around the twitter platform including Tweetmeme and Twittley these websites have the potential to send large amounts of traffic and are great for blogs.

After adding a Twittley button to one of my websites my traffic jumped after it the post had spread. Twittley has a “karma” system which pulls in various variables to filter out spam. The more you use Twittley on your website, the more traffic you will receive in return.

Building Followers

By building up real connections with people in your niche that you would like to connect with, you now have another marketing channel to add to your arsenal. Combined with retweets and Twittley, you now have viral traffic being generated by others.

To gain targeted twitter followers, first follow other people and companies in your industry. Then follow the followers of them. For example, if i were to start new venture, i’d follow all the movers and shakers in the industry, my competitors, and their followers.

Provide Value

Instead of using twitter to blast out ego-driven mini updates on your uber-exciting life, or to spam affiliate links everywhere, strive to network and build relationships with others in your industry. I’d rather have a handful of real connections on twitter than thousands of followers that follow thousands of other followers with no interaction.

Local Marketing On Twitter

Using Twitter’s advanced search you can find people near your location, simply type in your city or zip code and the latest tweets from people close to you will appear in the search results. Use it to interact with locals or to promote your retail location, products, or services.

Service Marketing On Twitter

To market your services on twitter try the following search patterns with your trade added.

  • “Anyone know”
  • “Looking for”
  • “needed”
  • “need a”

For example, if marketing web design services, I would type:

  • “Anyone know web designer”
  • “Looking for web designer”
  • “web designer needed”
  • “need a web designer”

Follower Churn Systems

The twitter trains and follower churner systems promise massive amounts of followers with little to no effort. They usually work by following people for you based on keywords and sometimes unfollowing them if they don’t reciprocate.

These systems may send followers but they are more than likely very un-targeted. Twitter also is weeding out these type of services. Not effective for long-term success, spend your money and energy elsewhere.

Automatic Direct Messages

“Hi, thanks for following me! I look forward to your tweets, check out: http://myspammysite.com!”

We have all seen it and whenever I do the person looses all credibility whatsoever. It tells me he is simply out to make a quick buck. A simple “hi” or “thank you” is perfectly fine, but don’t send out links so suddenly.

The Twitter Marketing Secret

No matter how you are using twitter for marketing, what you don’t want to do is spend hours on twitter thinking you ROI will be enormous and you’ll make tons of conversions. Twitter is simply a piece of the larger puzzle not a cure all marketing machine.

I haven't started to use Twitter as a marketing tool yet, so I don't have any tips to add. But in June I ran across a compilation of 10 helpful videos on Pamorama for people interested in using Twitter for their marketing. Your readers may appreciate looking at those videos as well.

really nice, easy to digest round up. Twitter is such a great tool for businesses- we've been using it with quite a good amount of success, particularly when building relationships.

What say you?
